Well, in order to help me raise money for Hungary trip, I decided to do a sponsored silence. This was the third time in 4 years that I have done it, and it doesn't get any easier.
The sponsored silence took place from 10am 6/6/08 - 10am 7/6/08. But in actual fact I had not spoken from midnight on the 5/6/08, so instead of doing 24 hours, I really did 36 hours. But am not really counting the first 12 hours as was asleep for them.
What did I do on my day of silence? Did I lie in bed all day and hide from the world? No
I started off the day watching three episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Season 3 (bit addicted to this), then left my house and went down to my sister's house - she was not there, so watched 5 episodes of Heros Season 2 and the best episodes of House (Three Stories) and West Wing (Two Cathedrals) and lay on her sofa... so did hide for part of it!
Then when Chris came home at 5pm, the note writing, the shrugging and trying to get across what I was saying via hand gestures started! It was quite funny and apparently my hand writing is atrocious. We went to Wagamama's for dinner, think the waitress thought I was ungrateful as I never said thank you and just grabbed the fork from her! and then we went to Shakespeare's Globe to see 'Midsummer Night's Dream'.
The Globe was the most difficult part as I wanted to talk about the play, ask questions about what was happening etc - but managed to not talk. Apart from frustrating moments here and a peaceful night for my sister, Saturday was relatively ok in the not talking stakes.
Sunday morning, saw me heading out to church for the 9.30 service. It was hard when I got to church as had no one to translate for me, as my interpreter was late arriving!, but found a friend and stood beside her, she teased me and tried to get me to talk my standing on my foot.... ouch!At that time only had 20 minutes left, was counting down the minutes.
Eventually my friend/interpreter arrived and we went in and sat in church, how annoying to be in church with great songs being sang and not allowed to sing as you are on a vow of silence! That was frustrating, but then as soon as 10am came, I uttered the words, "I can talk now" what a relief to me, but maybe not to others!
My friend said it is only 9.58, but with my watch it was 10am so I was talking no matter what! Well actually could not talk as was in church, but at least I could sing... la la la
I am very grateful to everyone who has given so generously to my sponsored silence fundraising, all the monies received as made it possible for me to reach my target amount. Am so pleased and thankful for everyone's support.
